Crafting a Four Patch Quilt Block Step by Step

Hey there, it's Rachel with Journey Back Quilts, and today, we're taking a delightful journey back to the basics of quilting. I'm thrilled to guide you through the process of creating a charming four patch block—one at a time. So, let's dive into this fun and straightforward quilting project together!

Gathering Your Materials
Before we begin, ensure you have everything you need. For this project, we'll require two dark fabrics and two light fabrics, all cut into squares measuring two and a half inches. These contrasting fabrics will add visual interest to our four patch blocks.

Now, head over to your sewing machine and pair a light square with a dark square, right sides together. Sew them together with a quarter-inch seam, aligning the raw edges carefully. If your fabric features a pattern, be mindful of the placement to maintain consistency throughout your blocks. I prefer using solid fabrics for this demonstration, but feel free to experiment with prints!

Once sewn, clip apart the connecting threads and head to the ironing board. Press the seams towards the darker fabric to ensure a crisp finish. Next, repeat this process with the remaining squares, creating pairs of light and dark squares. Chain piecing—sewing one pair after another—can help streamline the process and save time.

Now comes the magic! Place two pairs of squares together, ensuring the seams nest perfectly in the center. Nesting the seams allows for precise alignment and helps achieve those coveted perfect points in our blocks. Focus on aligning the seams rather than the raw edges, as this ensures the best results.

With the squares aligned, sew a quarter-inch seam along one side. Take care to maintain the alignment of the nested seams throughout the sewing process. After sewing, it's time to spin the seams. This technique involves pressing the seams in opposite directions, creating a mini pinwheel effect at the center of the block. This not only ensures flat seams but also adds visual interest to the finished block.

Head back to the ironing board and press the seams once more, ensuring they lay flat and the block retains its square shape. Check for any stray threads or uneven seams and make any necessary adjustments. Marvel at the adorable mini four patch that forms at the center—a testament to your precision and craftsmanship!

To ensure accuracy, measure your completed block. With your ruler, locate the center and confirm that the block measures four and a half inches. Adjust if necessary, but with careful sewing and pressing, squaring up shouldn't be needed. Admire your handiwork and revel in the satisfaction of creating a perfect four patch block—one at a time.
